Carrier Oils

Carrier oils are also called base oils. Because pure essential oils are so potent and strong, they often need to be diluted with a neutral oil that can 'carry' their potency.

This is much like how artists dilute their painting pigments with water or oils to lighten the intensity of the color. These base oils soften the intensity of pure essential oils so they are less concentrated and softer to the senses.

Here is a complete list of base oils for making aromatherapy products. The ingredients described as butters are oils, but they solidify at room temperature and work best when warmed and combined with liquid oils:
